I’m able to update pip-managed packages, but how do I update pip itself? According to
pip --version, I currently have pip 1.1 installed in my virtualenv and I want to update to the latest version.
What’s the command for that? Do I need to use distribute or is there a native pip or virtualenv command? I’ve already tried
pip update and
pip update pip with no success.

The more safe method is to run pip though a python module:
On windows there seem to be a problem with binaries that try to replace themselves, this method works around that limitation.
